Measure, view and capture accelerometer data in three dimensions with Accel4Pros. Developers have been leveraging the iphoneâ€™s built-in accelerometers to create cool apps for quite some time now (e.g., any app that is controlled via the movement of the phone). For the geek and investigator in all of us, Accel4Pros makes this back-end functionality readily accessible to anyone with an iphone. Accel4Pros is easy-to-use: launch the Accel4Pros app; perform a calibration; select your sampling rate, harness the phone to your projectile of choice (yourself, your dog, a water rocket, a snowboard, your roller blades, your luge, etc.); and press GO! Accel4Pros will collect data from the three accelerometers (x, y and z coordinates) and graphically display the results on three separate graphs. Email yourself the accelerometer output at the press of a button and convert it into anything you wish! Accel4Pros sends the raw data as a file attachment in the widely recognized CSV format. But wait, there's MORE! Accel4Pros now makes it possible to compare data across phones in a meaningful way. Using the Cal4Pros technology to calibrate the phonesâ€™ finicky accelerometers, Accel4Pros does its best to ensure that the data collected is both valid and normalized across phones (note: The CSV file includes both the raw and calibrated data for each dimension). Just remember: â€¢All output is given in terms of g. - g = 9.80665 m/s2 (32.1740 ft/s2) ... unless, of course, you're using this app on the moon (In which case, leave us a note, we will make an app for that). â€¢x is a measure of acceleration that is perpendicular to the screen. â€¢y measures the acceleration in the "up and down" directions as you hold the phone with the screen facing you. â€¢z is a measure of side-to-side acceleration when the phone is in this same orientation. â€¢Due to the effect of gravity, when Accel4Pros is run while the phone is lying on a flat surface, z will equal -1 (x and y will each equal 0). You will need to take this into consideration when performing post-hoc analysis of the Accel4Pros output.
