EtoPhone is an experimental application designed to express the "feelings" of an iPhone or iPad by using behavioral patterns. The heart of the application is the a highly dynamic state engine (called EtoMotor), which computes and updates the internal state of an artificial agent in response to certain events. A mobile phone doesn't have real emotions but it can behave as if it did. For instance, by stroking your iPhone, you probably like it to behave as if it was happy. If you receive a call at an unusual time, you'd expect it to show signs of anger or fright. Owners could more expressively be notified by signs of sadness if the charge level of the battery or the available storage capacity sink below a critical level. The EtoMotor inside the EtoPhone was designed to exhibit such behavior. The concept was inspired by the relationship between a dog and its owner. However, because dogs react in ways different from a mobile phone's actions, iPhone input events were mapped to EtoMotor input events. The application is very flexible. You can create your own input event mapping and then decide how you would like your iPhone to behave in certain pre-defined emotional states. In the upcoming version you will be able to share this configuration with others. The current version is intended only for researchers who want to experiment with EtoMotor. Once they succeed in creating the first good examples of how different input events can change the internal state of the iPhone and how it should behave in various emotional states, the application will be made available for the entertainment of the general public. To use EtoPhone, you have to: - install the EtoPhone iPhone Client to your iPhone or iPad from Apple Appstore - optionally you can install EtoPhone Simulator to your PC.
