Holy Family is an R-7 Catholic Primary School of 870 students in a low income suburb of Adelaide. 48% of the students have English as a second language. It was a school with very poor facilities (most classrooms were transportable) and there was a belief by people inside and outside the school that the students and staff could only achieve the limited standards of learning. After ten years of focused work, the Principal Kerry White and his team of staff, students and parents have overcome the obstacles. Today it is a school which is achieving excellence on many fronts: an innovative focused pedagogy guided by creative architecture and furniture, a emphasis on learners dispositions with Bristol University, a commitment to teaching environmental sustainability and food production, engendering distributed leadership among staff, students and parents, extensive use of Information and Communication Technologies using an Apple platform to achieve creative excellence, an artist in residence and vision that all students and staff will develop expertise in an aspect of the Arts in their learning. Holy Family is a safe place for learners to try new things and increase their engagement in learning. The current focus is on each student achieving high standards in Literacy and Numeracy. The school is determined to realize this outcome by modelling, sharing and guiding teachers and learners to become proficient interdependent users of literacy and numeracy.
